What Is The 30% Club?

The 30% Club was started in the UK as a response to the Lord Davies report on gender diversity in the corporate world. Whilst the UK report “Women On Boards” called for a 25% representation of women on boards in the FTSE 100 companies by 2015, a growing number of chairmen, senior executives and senior partners have committed to a voluntary figure of 30%. It is an international group of Chairmen, CEOs and senior partners of private sector organisations that are voluntarily committed to bringing more women onto boards because they believe it’s good for the overall effectiveness of the boardroom – and therefore good for business. Focus is also placed on the pipeline development to create sustainable change. Currently the 30% Club is active in the UK, Hong Kong, Australia, Canada, the Middle East, Kenya, USA, Italy, Malaysia, Ireland, the Gulf Co-operation countries and Southern Africa. As at October 2016 the 30% Club UK have advised that the goal set by Lord Davies to have 25% of women directors on FTSE 100 boards by the end of 2015 has been achieved. 30% is generally accepted as the minimum percentage for a minority to be able to positively influence a majority. The aim is to achieve or sustain the goal of 30% women on boards within five years of the organisation publicly committing to making the commitment This is business-led, voluntary change, in contrast to the pressures placed on corporates by legislation. Since March 2012, 49% of non-executive FTSE-100 appointments have been women. A confluence of factors has driven the breakthrough on non-executive director appointments in the UK: the leadership shown by the UK’s top company chairmen; the Davies Review’s ten clear recommendations; the collaborative and non-commercial nature of the 30% Club; broad political support and constructive sustained media attention.

The 30%CSA is run by Business Engage Association. In addition to running the 30%CSA Business Engage are the founders of the Gender Mainstreaming Awards, now in its third year. They are the authors of the “Best Practices in Gender Mainstreaming” and have developed the Participatory Gender Reviews, which are adapted from an International Labour Organisation process with their consent. The 30%CSA was launched in September 2014 at a private dinner in Sandton. The keynote speaker was Baroness Scotland, the UK trade envoy to South Africa at that time and the recently appointed Secretary General of the Commonwealth. It was fitting to have the Baroness, together with the British High Commissioner, at the launch as apart from the sterling work that she does on gender matters in the UK, she is the only women ever to hold the post of Attorney General, effectively the Queens council, a position that goes back to the year 1315.
